If you live in the United States and want to legally drive a car, than you need to have a car insurance policy. There is just no way around it. Unfortunately, for many the rising costs of auto-insurance premiums are becoming a serious financial burden on their lives. For one man, it became such a burden that he decided to make a massive change. No, he did not switch to Geico. He switched his gender instead.
While this may sound insane, the logic is there. There is, in fact, a known price gap between auto-insurance policies for men and those for women. The reasoning isn’t based on sexism however, it’s based on numbers. Especially in today’s world where data reigns king, insurers rely on data analysis to price their policies. Unfortunately, the data shows that men are a riskier investment than women when it comes to driving habits.
Statistically speaking, younger men are measurably more likely to get into accidents than others. In fact, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, men are twice as likely to die in a car crash in the United States. In general, the data shows that men are more likely to drive drunk, drive fast and drive recklessly. This means that male drivers are more likely to file a claim, which in turn means that insurers need to charge more to make offering male drivers an auto-insurance policy a reasonable business investment.
David from Alberta, Canada knows this and decided to take matters into his own hands. According to an interview he did with CBC, David decided to change his gender to female so that he could save money on his car insurance. As crazy as that may sound, it worked.
“It was pretty simple. I just basically asked for it and told (the doctor) that I identify as a woman, or I’d like to identify as a woman, and he wrote me the letter I wanted,” David told CBC. “I am now a woman … I now pay $1,100 less for auto insurance. I won. The end,” said David via a Reddit post.
Now, we certainly aren’t advocating this behaviour, but in a world where people are identifying as different genders, it does raise questions that should be addressed for the insurance industry. This is certainly an area worth keeping an eye on.
