Amazon Partners With Popular Insurance Company

While Amazon does not seem to be planning on selling their own insurance policies anytime soon, they are still interested in tapping into the growing insurance market. That is why it really is not that surprising to see Amazon’s latest announcement that they are teaming up with Travelers Insurance to offer some shared services.

According to Amazon, they will be offering smart-home kits, risk management information and insurance quotes through a Travelers digital storefront that will live on Amazon’s website. Of course, visitors who want an insurance quote can start at the digital storefront, but will be redirected to either Travelers site or that of an independent insurance agency.

Naturally, a large component of this partnership has to do with Amazon selling physical items, which is where the smart-home kit comes in. According to the Insurance Journal, the smart-home kit includes: “…security cameras, water sensors, motion detectors and a smart home hub that wirelessly connects smart devices and enables them to work together.”.

Visitors will be able to receive a discounted kit through the digital storefront in participating states. Eligible Travelers customers will actually be able to earn a discount on their homeowners premium with the purchase of a smart-home kit.

Travelers is promoting this partnership by offering a free Amazon Echo Dot to eligible homeowners insurance customers. It looks like the purchase of a smart-home kit is not necessary to get the free Echo Dot.

It’s also worth mentioning that this partnership has resulted in more Alexa commands, including: “Alexa, ask Travelers when my bill is due,” or “Alexa, ask Home Central for a fall home maintenance tip.”. Amazon has announced that more insurance related commands will become available in the coming months.

Travelers is billing this partnership as “the insurance industry’s first digital storefront.”. This is certainly a story worth watching. It will be interesting to see how consumers respond to this digital storefront.
