Are you considering moving sometime soon? It’s always worth taking the time to thoroughly research the city you plan on moving to. A great way to do this is to look at the official lists of the most dangerous cities in the United States. Luckily, these lists were recently updated! Let’s take a closer look.
The National Council for Home Safety and Security (NCHSS) released the latest version of their Top 100 Dangerous Cities In America report. Now, the NHCSS only focuses on larger cities—which they define as cities with a population of more than 100,000 people. Using that criteria, the NCHSS found that the top 10 most dangerous cities in the United States are:
-St. Louis, MO
-Little Rock, AR
-Baltimore City, MD
Now if you are looking at moving to a smaller city, i.e. one with less than 100,000 people, fear not, we have data on that too! The best way to measure smaller cities is to use the latest FBI crime data to find the average crime rate in every city. According to that data, the ten most dangerous cities in the U.S. with a population of less than 100,000 people are:
-East St. Louis, Illinois
-Darby Borough, Pennsylvania
-Opa Locka, Florida
-Florida City, Florida
-Saginaw City, Michigan
-College Park, Georgia
-West Memphis, Arkansas
If you do happen to live in one of those cities, there is some good news! While they are statistically the most dangerous cities in America, violent crime is actually trending down in those areas. According to FBI crime data, seven of the top ten most dangerous cities have actually seen violent crime drop by double-digit percentage points.
Of course, crime data should not be the sole factor you use to decide what city you want to move too. That being said, it can’t hurt to know what you are getting into! These lists are updated every year and always worth checking back in on.
